STEP-1 . in the first step in this restoration tutorial will start by desaturating the image and why we did that is because we first need to simplify the colors in the image to grey scale so it will be easier for us to heal and correct the image using both the Dodge tool and the Burn tool to balancing and calibrating between black , white and grey instead of working on a photo that contains colors it will be more difficult.
STEP-2 . in the second step will be using a fast technique to clean up and change the background behind the subject into a clean white color by using the Dodge tool instead of using the Pen tool or the Quick Selection tool to separate & cut out the subject from the background then pasting it in a new layer, so using the Dodge tool was a faster and simple tricky way to do it.
STEP-3 . next we used the Spot Healing Brush Tool to clean up and removing any scratches or crackings in the picture and make things look clean then also we used the Clone Stamp Tool to recover and heal other spots in the photo.
STEP-4 . in the 4th step we’ve copied the left ear of the subject then we’ve mirrored it to heal and replace the right ear which was fully blurred and invisible.
STEP-5 . in the 5th step we’ve used the Burn tool to bring the details back to life and to outline the mouth and the eyes so that the facial features becomes clearer, then we also used the Dodge tool to whitening and healing other portions in the image.
STEP-6 . finally we have enhanced the clarity a little bit using the Camera Raw filter available in Adobe Photoshop CC 2020
STEP-7
Neutralize the color and adjust the contrast.
If the photo is sepia-toned, add a Black & White adjustment layer to neutralize the color and a Levels adjustment layer to fix the contrast
A few (of the many) techniques for adding colour.
method 1: Use the brush with Solid Colour adjustment layers.
This method involves adding a Solid Colour adjustment layer for every aspect of the photo you want to paint. Change the blending mode to Colour so the details of the original image show through the paint. Invert the layer mask to black and use the brush to paint over the part of the image you want to colorise.
method 2: Use the Quick Selection tool with Solid Colour layers.
Once you’ve created a new layer, use the Quick Selection tool to outline the area you want to colour. You might need to zoom in to fix any areas selected accidentally. Click the Refine Edge button to smooth the edges of your selection. (The Refine Edge tool is also great for colorising fine details like hair.) Then add a new Solid Colour Fill layer, choose the colour and set the blend mode to Colour. Then you can simply adjust the colour until it looks right. Repeat this process for each element in the image. Quick Mask mode can help you quickly remove areas you don’t want to paint (like buttons or eyes) inside of a larger selection.
method 3: Use Curve adjustment layers.
You can also add colour by creating a Curve adjustment layer. Find the colour you want by adjusting the cyan, magenta and yellow curves and then use the brush to paint. Create a new layer for each colour.
